    A novel method for subjective picture quality assessment and further studies of HDTV formats

Copyright @ IEEE 2008.This paper proposes a novel method for the assessment of picture quality, called triple stimulus continuous evaluation scale (TSCES), to allow the direct comparison of different HDTV formats. The method uses an upper picture quality anchor and a lower picture quality anchor with defined impairments. The HDTV format under test is evaluated in a subjective comparison with the upper and lower anchors. The method utilizes three displays in a particular vertical arrangement. In an initial series of tests with the novel method, the HDTV formats 1080p/50,1080i/25, and 720p/50 were compared at various bit-rates and with seven different content types on three identical 1920 times 1080 pixel displays. It was found that the new method provided stable and consistent results. The method was tested with 1080p/50,1080i/25, and 720p/50 HDTV images that had been coded with H.264/AVC High profile. The result of the assessment was that the progressive HDTV formats found higher appreciation by the assessors than the interlaced HDTV format. A system chain proposal is given for future media production and delivery to take advantage of this outcome. Recommendations for future research conclude the paper

    Towards the Development of a Risk Model for Unmanned Vessels Design and Operations

    An unmanned merchant vessel seems to be escaping from the stage of idea exploration. Once the concept proofs its safety, it may become a part of maritime reality. Although the safety aspect of such a ship has been addressed by a handful of scholars, the problem remains open. This is mainly due to lack of knowledge regarding actual operational circumstances and design of unmanned ships, which are yet to be developed. In the attempt of bridging this gap, the risk analysis associated with unmanned ships needs to be carried out, where all relevant hazards and consequences are assessed and quantified in systematic manner. In this paper we present the results of a first step of such analysis, namely the hazard analysis associated with the unmanned ships. The list of hazards covers various aspects of unmanned shipping originating from both design and operational phases of vessel’s life. Subsequently the hazards and related consequences are organized in a casual manner, resulting in the development of a structure of a risk model

    High-Definition Optical Coherence Tomography for the in vivo Detection of Demodex Mites

    Background: Demodex mites are involved in different skin diseases and are commonly detected by skin scrape tests or superficial biopsies. A new high-definition optical coherence tomography (HD-OCT) with high lateral and axial resolution in a horizontal (en-face) and vertical (slice) imaging mode might offer the possibility of noninvasive and fast in vivo examination of demodex mites. Methods: Twenty patients with demodex-related skin diseases and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were examined by HD-OCT. Mites per follicle and follicles per field of view were counted and compared to skin scrape tests. Results: HD-OCT images depicted mites in the en-face mode as bright round dots in groups of 3-5 mites per hair follicle. In the patients with demodex-related disease, a mean number of 3.4 mites per follicle were detected with a mean number of 2.9 infested follicles per area of view compared to a mean of 0.6 mites in 0.4 infested follicles in the controls. The skin scrape tests were negative in 21% of the patients. Conclusion: The innovative HD-OCT enables fast and noninvasive in vivo recognition of demodex mites and might become a useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of demodex-related skin diseases.     Stable bidentate silylene adducts of alkaline‐earth amides

    The coordination chemistry of silylenes is known for a vast number of elements of all blocks of the periodic table. However, only a handful of examples of silylene complexes have been reported for heavy alkaline-earth elements, which is mainly attributed to the “hard-soft” mismatch between the “hard” metal center and the “soft” silicon donor. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of alkaline-earth silylene complexes comprising a bidentate pyridyl-amido-silylene ligand. The isolated Ca, Sr and Ba complexes show considerably increased stability in comparison to other known alkaline-earth silylene complexes. The molecular structures of all three complexes are essentially similar. Interestingly, depending on the central metal, the 1H NMR chemical shifts of the ortho-H atom show unexpected large differences. As an application, we discuss a battery storage control to show how a decision problem, which is practically unsolvable in the original formulation, can be treated by our method

    Mid-Infrared High-Contrast Imaging of HD 114174 B : An Apparent Age Discrepancy in a "Sirius-Like" Binary System

    We present new observations of the faint "Sirius-like" companion discovered to orbit HD 114174. Previous attempts to image HD 114174 B at mid-infrared wavelengths using NIRC2 at Keck have resulted in a non-detection. Our new L'-band observations taken with the Large Binocular Telescope and LMIRCam recover the companion (ΔL\Delta L = 10.15 ±\pm 0.15 mag, ρ\rho = 0.675'' ±\pm 0.016'') with a high signal-to-noise ratio (10 σ\sigma). This measurement represents the deepest L' high-contrast imaging detection at sub-arcsecond separations to date, including extrasolar planets. We confirm that HD 114174 B has near-infrared colors consistent with the interpretation of a cool white dwarf (JLJ-L' = 0.76 ±\pm 0.19 mag, KLK-L' = 0.64 ±\pm 0.20). New model fits to the object's spectral energy distribution indicate a temperature TeffT_{\rm eff} = 4260 ±\pm 360 K, surface gravity log g = 7.94 ±\pm 0.03, a cooling age tc_{c} \approx 7.8 Gyr, and mass MM = 0.54 ±\pm 0.01 MM_{\odot}. We find that the cooling age given by theoretical atmospheric models do not agree with the age of HD 114174 A derived from both isochronological and gyrochronological analyses. We speculate on possible scenarios to explain the apparent age discrepancy between the primary and secondary. HD 114174 B is a nearby benchmark white dwarf that will ultimately enable a dynamical mass estimate through continued Doppler and astrometric monitoring. Efforts to characterize its physical properties in detail will test theoretical atmospheric models and improve our understanding of white dwarf evolution, cooling, and progenitor masses.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letter
